Currently there is a huge demand for schools to be teaching coding. Having children learn coding at a young age prepares them for the future. Coding helps children with communication, creativity, math, writing, and confidence. Programming literacy is an incredibly important skill and we are bringing that skill to our kindergarteners in a fun and playful way. From a teacher's perspective, the type of thinking that goes into learning to code is very sophisticated. It’s complex, multifaceted, and requires children to think deeply, not just recite back rote information. It’s the kind of thinking we want our kids to be doing to develop their brains. Integrating the Bee Bots and the Mouse Robot into our reading stations will allow the students to practice literacy skills as they are learning to code! What a fun way to learn both, coding and reading! Students will be super excited to engage in the literacy skills when working with partners to solve and create paths for the robots to find letter sound matches, rhyming words, word families, or other literacy skills. Once the students understand the basic skills of coding, the use of the robots will be endless. I can't wait to see them set up their own coding mats and challenges! This project will help my students tremendously as they learn to code and give direction, they will also learn that there is no one way to do something, even if their way didn’t work. They can improve upon what they have already done without worrying about failing. Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, and it is important for kids to understand and be able to work with and understand the technology around them. I can't wait to see the excitement of learning to code together!
