Creating this classroom library for my high school students will give my students ready access to books that will take them out of the rural community in which they live and transport them to places, cultures, and activities that may be very different from the world in which they live. These books will give a multicultural perspective from which to build their understanding of the complexity of the world. There is nothing more powerful than having interesting novels for my students to read, in order to develop empathy for others, to gain perspective of another person's plight, and to become passionate readers. These books will help me to get students hooked on reading as I develop a reader's workshop experience in the classroom.
