I am requesting graphic novels to add to my classroom library. Students come into my classroom at all different reading levels and at this point in their education, many students have given up on being "good" readers. Students who have struggled with reading early on often give up their love of reading. Graphic novels are a great way to both engage reluctant readers and improve reading skills. Graphic novels have become increasingly popular in past years and students love to read the new, "cool" books. These novels also have great academic benefits! Students with low self-esteem can finally feel like reading is accessible to them and they begin to love reading again. Because graphic novels rely so heavily on illustrations, they help to improve a student's ability to make inferences. Speed readers learn to slow down and comprehension improves through the use of graphic novels. All of the graphic novels I am requesting for my classroom come very highly recommended. Each of these books can be found on either the School Library Journal or Association for Library Service to Children's list of best graphic novels for middle school students.
