The items I have chosen for this project are all items that will help incentivize reading for my students. I plan to use this area as a reward. In our classroom, we have a corner of the room that is used to run a small group. While I was setting things up this year, it occured to me that I could double that area as a reading nook. I selected a plush area rug for students to lie down on while they read, complete a puzzle during free time, or do some independent work on lap desks or clipboards. The bean bag chairs will be offered as flexible seating in the same area and make it more attractive for students. The books are some of the most requested books I have had to add to our library. Lastly, I have table lamps on my list not only to make our new reading area feel cozy and add lighting but to also really make it seem like this area is a treat for them. The lamps I chose have usb ports on them. So if students earn the opportunity to be in our reading area, they will also be offered the opportunity to charge their phones. Last year, this was a great incentive for them. I made a deal with them that if they stayed on task, they could keep charging their phone. I want to structure this reward a little better this year so we will give this idea a shot!
