My students typically love reading sources such as scholastic magazines because they are interesting, colorful, and about relevant topics in their lives. They often take them home for later enjoyment, which is fantastic because they often don't have reading material of any kind available at home, and are not in the habit of visiting the library. Many of my English Language Learners struggle with academic tasks and skills, such as reading comprehension, summarizing, separating truth from opinion, and writing in an organized fashion about non-fiction. Using Scholastic magazines and other highly engaging materials helps them acquire the necessary skills while being exciting, relevant and on point.
