Over the past year, I have begun to introduce alternative seating options into my 6th grade classroom. I was surprised at how excited the students were to have options to standard desks to sit in to complete their work. (Though, after giving it a little though I realized that when given an option, I too gravitate to a couch or comfy chair to complete my homework. At first, I added a small round table with comfy chairs, and then a square table with comfy chairs. The biggest shock about the change in seating was how well my students focused and worked as a team. They started turning in better work and on time. Students enjoyed the alternative seating so much and worked so much better when given options, that I am trying to expand upon the idea. I have successfully purchased an additional table. However, I still need help acquiring more seating so that I can accommodate all of my students. I would like to add four wobble stools that allow for movement while sitting at a regular table without the chance of falling. The chairs act as a fidget and are not a distraction to others. I would also, like to add a futon at the front of the classroom. I like the idea of a futon because three students can sit on it during class, but it can be laid out flat for group work or projects so that more students could sit on or around it to work together. By donating to my classrooms alternative flexible seating, you will not only help to improve the options, you will also be helping to provide students with a learning environment that works for today’s learners. Thank You.
