I teach 7th grade Reading Mastery, a supplement to a school's core reading program, which helps struggling readers develop reading and testing strategies they will incorporate throughout their lives! For most of my students, English is their second language. Spanish is primarily spoken and read at home. When they first enter my class, they often express their distaste for reading in general which usually means they're lacking the tools necessary to comprehend what they're reading. My job is to give them additional tools and strategies to break various genres down into a more manageable piece. This is done in a judgement free classroom where each student eventually feels comfortable to read out load and participate in Socratic seminars. It is my goal to equip each of my students with the necessary reading strategies, so reading becomes less of a struggle and more of a fulfilling journey or outlet.
