I teach several English classes including one called Modern Graphic Novel. I am hoping to increase my offerings for my students across my schedule. My goal is to offer my students the opportunity to read graphic novels by BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ creators, bringing more representation into my English courses. My students occupy a small urban ring town that has grown more diverse with each passing year and the need to provide stories from and about people who reflect their own experiences has become a major priority in my classroom. The graphic novel form is accessible and effective and an ideal way to connect kids with worlds they have not seen before.
