I teach music to about 300 students in grades K-6 from two elementary schools. One school is Columbus Elementary school and the other is across the street from Columbus named Appleton Bi-lingual School. My classroom is located at Columbus school. My students are very unique in that I believe they are more focused and more apt to participate in music if they are sitting in a flexible seating type of setting. Currently, students in grades k-3 sit on the floor and the upper grade students sit in chairs in a half moon around the back and edges of my classroom. I've studied my students in my classroom as well as in their homeroom classrooms. Most of our teachers have some flexible seating arrangements in their rooms. The students really seem to feel more comfortable and understand the rules of flexible seating an follow those expectations. Flex seating would allow more movement in music while sitting!
