In ELA, students are expected to not only read a lengthy text but to comprehend and show evidence that they understand what they've read. Having a comfy area where they can sprawl out or curl up with some interesting informational text and write down their ideas is ideal for their comfort and concentration. During Daily 5 students will go to the designated areas around the classroom to work on their tasks. Plush rugs will naturally separate the space and open it up for reading by placing it near our two bookshelves. Ergonomic seating gives students a chance to switch up how they want to read and also help with their posture during independent reading. Whiteboards and dry erase markers will assist in students taking notes as they read and communicating with each other about a text during Daily 5. The whiteboards will also be used during writing workshop and checking for understanding during whole group teaching. Floor lamps will give the classroom a cozy vibe and help students see easier. Binders will keep student work organized for each child to refer to during small group instruction and teacher meetings. Binders will also hold student information to refer to during parent-teacher conferences.
