Because we are fitting more than a year of curriculum into one school year, it is essential that we combine concepts and learn through interdisciplinary studies. Having these novels will provide on-level reading materials for 5 reading groups that directly connect to each region of the United States that we are studying. As we analyze the novels in small group reading, we will connect what we are learning in social studies about each region and to personal experiences to strengthen students' understanding of the material. Along with this, we will be simulating a road trip across the country, completing hands-on activities, using maps, learning about the natural resources, economics, climate, using math to budget, creative writing, and researching landmarks. This will culminate in a final project. The students will love this experience!
