Over the last year we radically changed the focus in my classroom from a top-down educational system where I stand at the front of the room and the students "absorb" information to an ownership system, where the students become journalists, investigators, and detectives discovering information for themselves and reporting back to their peers using technology to make that reporting entertaining. We are now in the process of creating a more "legit" (as the kids say) newsroom-type atmosphere wherein the students learn how to use cameras, audio gear, lighting, green screens, write scripts, and produce the actual finished product of a news story or documentary-type short film. They love it!
