According to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, Black, Latino, and Native authors combined wrote less than 6% of new children's book published in 2016. It is vital that my students see themselves reflected in the pages of the books in their classroom; that they see themselves as the future authors of our YA novels. This project is intended to give my students a comfortable reading space with beanbags where they can read novels with characters that reflect their own culture: Daniel José Older's novel Shadowshaper, Ta-Nehisi Coates' new graphic novel Black Panther, Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and a new graphic novel by Marvel based on a Muslim girl from New Jersey, Ms. Marvel. By seeing themselves reflected as survivors and warriors, heroes and heroines, they will expand their own expectations of who they can become.
