This year in AP English IV the curriculum has been rearranged based on student needs. We have seen a trend that our students are lacking in their knowledge of basic literature. A healthy background of novels is essential to success on AP exams, particularly the free choice essay question. Unfortunately many of my students simply haven not read. My team has worked to rearrange the curriculum and base it on individual student choice novels. Unfortunately my students do not necessarily have the resources to go out and buy individual books. This project will put more novels into students hands so that they can be more successful in both my class and on their AP exams. I've selected a variety of books through Amazon to use in my classroom. Some of the titles are old familiars like Frankenstein and Paradise Lost, but there are also newer faces like works by Cormac McCarthy and Vonnegut. I've also selected some books that expose my students to different cultures and backgrounds to stretch them as readers and as better human beings. My students will read these novels and engage with the words as well as their peers through discussion and debate. My goal is to remove myself as much as possible from the learning process and have students reading and discussing these novels without my prompting. One project has already been funded giving me a few novels, but many have already been loved on too much. This project will also provide more variety and choice for my students. There are books ranging from all periods and many different genres. I have seen my students engage with literature in ways I had not thought imaginable, and I would love for you to also be a part in this process. Proud member of ATPE.
