Once upon a time, there was a grownup, a child, and a favorite book. Children learned to read on a parent's or grandparent's lap. Many of us remember our own experience listening to favorite books being read again and again. My students don't have that luxury. Listening to books does so much for student literacy. Listening to audiobooks above their independent reading level increases students' vocabulary. Listening to reading provides students with examples of expressive reading, increasing there reading fluency. Audio books are fun, inspiring a love of reading! Audio books also improve writing skills. Using mentor texts motivates and supports student writers. If we want students to write well, it is important to show them, not tell them what good writing looks like. They provide examples of writer's craft and ideas to use in their own writing.
