These books will be used to read aloud to students and teach vocabulary. Students who come from a low socioeconomic status score two years behind on standardized test due to language development. Studies have found that children in middle and upper class hear 15 million more words than children in working-class families and 30 million more words than children on welfare. Exposing my students to books and the vocabulary inside books will expand my students' vocabulary knowledge and increase their test scores. Using trade books to read aloud to students and teaching vocabulary during the read aloud is a strategy my school district trained teachers on at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.
