Having a high quality teaching easel is a critical piece of equipment in a primary classroom. The teaching/gathering area of our classroom is the hub of learning where we share the learning space together through shared reading & writing, read alouds, as well as speaking & listening.
A well-designed gathering place in any classroom is a non-negotiable; it is a space that allows the entire class to come together as a family of readers, writers, and thinkers. The teaching easel is a central piece of equipment that allows me to display books, class messages, as well as model writing for my students.
In a kindergarten classroom, it is vital that my young learners are immersed in quality instruction up close with their teacher and classmates. Teacher modeling is a powerful tool, greatly improved by having a quality easel that is easy for students to see & interact with, allowing me to be close to them so I can listen in on partner talk and make critical teaching decisions necessary to enhance learning.
