My role as the Behavior Coach is to teach strategies and provide my students with the tools to understand and manage their emotions. Our children often need help processing their overwhelming emotions. They often lack the ability to recognize the warning signs their bodies give them when they are about to lose control. It is crucial that our students learn to listen to their body and identify ways in which they can calm themselves. Although our students typically have the ability to process through their emotions and debrief with a trusted adult in the building, many of them have a difficult time de-escalating and regulating their emotions on their own. With these tools and strategies, students will learn ways to regulate on their own and decrease the time it takes to get them back to a positive space. Through this project I hope to be able to offer students a variety of calm down strategies in my room such as; thinking putty, stress balls, timers, sensory bottles, and mindful activity cards to name a few. Every student has a different learning method and the same is true for coping strategies. What may work for one student is not always going to work for another. By offering students alternative methods to de-escalate it will help them to become more aware and engaged in their social-emotional needs.
