The funding of this project will allow me to create a “MakerSpace” in my classroom. My students will benefit from this MakerSpace because it focuses on student-centered inquiry. The students in my classroom have unique learning needs that will thrive in a MakerSpace learning environment because it allows them to express themselves, explore and learn without fear of failure. My students need a “MakerSpace” with an array of materials such as LEGO bricks, electrical circuit materials, markers, Play-Doh, cardstock, paint, tape and similar items to furnish them the opportunity to manage their own learning and give them access to content in a manner that makes learning meaningful and long-lasting. One example of how students will utilize the MakerSpace materials is to open explore a concept such as electricity. Using bulbs, copper tape, Play-Doh and batteries students will be able to construct different types of circuits. The only restraints will be their imaginations! I am so thrilled about the prospect of a MakerSpace for my students to utilize. It is important that urban learners have experiences that promote the core competency of 21st century skills. My students are in dire need of educational experiences that allow them to develop these skills of collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving. A MakerSpace not only helps them learn core science concepts but also better prepares them for the challenges of the workforce.
