The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks will be a culmination of the larger conversation we will be having throughout the year on the topic of social justice in all forms: race, gender, age, religion, ability, economics, etc. Once the students have finished reading and discussing the issues and implications within the novel, they will then begin to think about a social justice-inspired issue that is meaningful to them personally. They will then research this issue more in-depth and develop a grant proposal to help solve a current problem within our community. My ultimate goal for the year--along with helping my students become stronger readers and writers--is for them to not just watch the world around them, but to take a part in making it better. It's never too early for activism, or at the very least passion for a cause. As teachers, it's the greatest lesson we can give our students.
