In my senior literature classes, I encourage my students to find connections between themselves and the texts with which they engage. Many of the texts are older; they are about people and places that are far removed from their lives and experiences. Although analyzing these texts is important, I also want students to see that their own stories are just as important. Junot Diaz once said that he wrote books to create "mirrors so that kids like [him] might see themselves reflected back;" the books I'm requesting will serve as mirrors for many of my students. "Long Way Down" tells the story of a young man who is struggling with the death of his brother and the "rules" that govern his family and neighborhood. Students will engage in discussions surrounding themes of grief, revenge, cultural expectations, gender roles, cycles of violence and more.
