Students need to have the option to move! Along with recess, students should continue to "exercise" throughout the day. This seems impossible when we're asking students to sit for six hours a day. A typical classroom now-a-days looks a lot different than a classroom from a decade ago, but there's one thing that hasn't changed; traditional desks and chairs. I am working towards creating an alternative classroom that would allow students to be more active, while continuing to be successful in their learning. Having a classroom with bean bags, wobble chairs, and soft seats will allow students the freedom to move around while learning. My plan is to put the bean bags on our carpet in the library area to give readers a place to relax. Wobble chairs will be utilized at the table for small group/teacher intervention time. The comfy floor seats can be used anywhere in the classroom, so students have the freedom to work in a comfortable space. Students can use the soft seats for their chairs at their desks, for those students who prefer structure and designated space to work that is theirs. Right now, I only have traditional chairs and desks. My students spend a lot of time working independently, in pairs, or groups on the floor or on the carpet because they enjoy moving and working around the classroom. With flexible seating, my students can not only be comfortable working around the classroom, but those students who need to "squirm" can do so without distracting the whole class. This grant will help my active students continue to learn in a fun and comfortable environment!
