The students we teach are at risk students who are from low income families that live in a poverty stricken area. Majority of them are from single parent households or are taken care of by guardians. Our students lack books in their homes. They lack opportunities to experience the world outside of their community. They lack family conversations and involvement. In our Pre-K class we assume an active and encouraging role in guiding our students to explore, express, create, experiment, observe and discover. This year we were fortunate enough to have a child in our class who was born with Caudal Regression. Caudal Regression is a congenital disorder in which there is abnormal fetal development of the spine. This child can not use his lower extremities but does not allow that to stop him from doing what he want and needs to do. He has been a joy to have and is definitely an inspiration to our class.
