Adolescents struggle with seeing beyond their own lives and experiences and empathizing with others. Though this novel, Journey to Jo'burg, they will follow Naledia and Tiro on a journey through South Africa during Aparthied. My students will be able to see how the laws of Apartheid affected children their own age, gaining a better understanding of history and a greater empathy for others. We also make connections to our own history: our struggles with racial equality and our civil rights movement. We compare Nelson Mandela to Martin Luther King, jr and Gandhi, creating a global understanding and furthering our roles as citizens of the world.
