Reading aloud to children is crucial for their growth. Unfortunately, as students get older many parents and teachers stop reading aloud to them because many of them can independently read. Research has said thsat a student's listening comprehension is far greater than his or her independent conprehhension level. Reading aloud allows even struggling students to access grade-level literature. All students benefit from fluent reading being modeled as well as hearing correct pronunciation of unknown words. If students have their own personal copy of the read aloud, they are going to be more engaged. Students also thrive from the personal aspect of reading and discussing a piece of literature with his or her teacher and peers. Pictures of Hollis Woods is a book about a young girl in the foster care system. I like to use this book in my classroom because it shows students that other people have unconventonal family situations. It also teaches students the importance of friendship, trust, love, and the power they have.
