These books will help enhance our classroom culture by providing text rich learning environment. Each book was carefully chosen to represent the diversity that the students in my classroom see in each other. These books will not only be used as a teacher read albe readily available to all students during our independent reading time, throughout the year. Did you know that, according to a 2018 study at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, only 10% of books depict characters of African/African American decent? With a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books, my project is designed to specifically add cultural diversity to my classroom through BOOKS! By having these book easily accessible to students, they will have a greater opportunity to select books with main characters that look like them, all different colors and ethnic backgrounds. For children, this is extremely important! They will be able to make personal connections to the stories because they will be able to see themselves in books! This library also allows other students to see through a window into a world they may not be familiar with.
