My students struggle to keep their focus while sitting in desks for 90 minute blocks. They need a variety of options that will allow them to be comfortable in their environment and focus on their work. I have always had a policy of flexible seating, but it has remained limited due to the desks. I have been blessed with the opportunity to acquire tables, but need the different seating options. Flexible seating will facilitate learning and collaboration in the classroom. The rugs and coffee table are for creating comfortable floor seats for the students to work. The side tables are to create workspaces out of four chairs that I have found. The plastic chairs are a supplement for the existing chairs. The fidget bands will go around the legs of the chairs and will provide stimuli. The bean bag chairs are a result of a student who learned best sitting in on one, so I have decided to incorporate them as a permanent fixture. In researching my options for flexible seating, I gave my students a survey. This is why my students want flexible seating: “By the end of the school day I'm tired of sitting in a desk, and find myself struggling to pay attention.” “It would provide ways for students to be more active in the classroom environment; getting up and collaborating at desks together, being in a better mood, and ready to learn, due to comfortable seating options.” “As a student I often feel very confined in the conventional classroom desk, cramped in with your peers. It does not lead to a constructive learning environment. The ability to have flexible seating would make me as a student feel more focused, comfortable and all around more prepared".
