My students need copies of Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe to further their understanding of world literature, and have the ability to complete reading at home. My classroom already has some copies of this book, but not enough for each student to use their own book. Sharing a book is hard for my students, because they lose interest fast. They also begin to think it is not that important, because if it was, there would be enough books for each of them. When students have their own book they feel a sense of ownership of their learning. The students can take their books home with them, and even read ahead if they want to. My tenth graders are focused on world literature this year, and they are enthusiastic and have many questions about different cultures. I want to fuel this desire as much as possible, and having one book for each student will help achieve this goal.
