I don't know about you, but sitting still is not one of my strong points. I like to doodle, wiggle, and move about all day long. I often think about this when I ask my 6 and 7 year old students to sit still for a work-task. They have so much energy, yet they are confined to one work space for the duration of the school day. I want to create a learning environment for my first-graders that give them flexible seating choices when they do their independent work. Reading lots and lots of research on the topic has convinced me that flexible seating not only will help re-direct their energy, but will motivate them to self-regulate and make positive learning choices. I have experimented with this idea in my classroom before, and my students absolutely loved the fact that they got to "choose" where they wanted to work. They were now eager to start their assignments. I saw some of the best work from students who usually don't complete tasks at all. Having the furniture and equipment needed to create a legitimate flexible-seating classroom would be a dream come true for my students and me! The lap desks, exercise balls, floor pillows, and stools will allow my first graders to choose where they would like to work around our classroom. I am also requesting some basic school supplies and materials for our literacy stations. My students need pencils and dry erase markers, as well as a listening center. With your donations, my students will complete assignments with joy and determination. Thank you for your help and support!
