These students are ready to start doing things for themselves. They crave authentic experiences where they can apply their learning. The first thing that your donation would buy is some vocational task boxes that will set up independent workstations for the students. They will work on task completion without adult prompting and following a set of steps with only picture cues. Another activity that the students find very motivating and builds great daily living skills is cooking. Right now, I have to create new visual schedules for each recipe we want to make as a class.
Having cookbooks with recipes that can be accessed by readers and non-readers alike will ensure that all students can participate equally in the cooking activities. These books will also make it easier to send copies of the recipe home for families to participate and repeat cooking activities at home. All of these students deserve to build as many skills as they can and they are eager to engage in these kind of daily living skills.
