We will use these materials for our one hour a day outdoor gross motor play time. Outdoor play enables children to enjoy the natural environment and learn to seek out exercise, fresh air, and activity. There is something fundamentally healthy about using the outdoors. Thus outdoor play develops disposition for the outdoors, for physical activity, and for care of the environment. What a special way to learn to love the outdoors while getting the much needed exercise every child needs. Gross motor skills are the abilities required to control the large muscles of the body for walking, jumping, skipping, and more. As our playground will be under construction we will need materials readily accessible to help our children develop the gross motor skills they need. Such as the giant alphabet stepping stones and giant number stepping stones to help with balance and alternating steps while learning the letters in the alphabet and numbers for counting. Also to help eye and hand coordination with throwing we can use the beginner's basketball and hoop with backboard set and for catching we can use the easy grip ball toss set and various balls with peers or nets. Let's not forget how fun a game of kickball can be while helping build their skills. Locomotor activity — movement from one spot to another. Examples: walking, running, climbing, leaping, jumping, hopping, galloping, sliding, and skipping. Non locomotor activity — movement in a stationary place. Examples: pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, turning, swinging, swaying, rising, and falling. Manipulative skills — moving objects in a variety of ways. Examples: throwing, kicking, striking, and catching.
