Many of my students come into the classroom not ready to learn, but ready to escape. School is their safe haven. It is where they know adults care about them, they are fed regularly, and they are warm. The lights are on and the water bill is paid. Unfortunately, this is not the reality for many students when the bell rings at 3:45. The trauma they bring with them affects every part of their school-life. I need to learn strategies to help provide these students with the supports that they need. If I cannot help support them emotionally, how can I expect them to grow academically? For this reason, I would like to attend the Creating Trama Sensitive Schools Conference in 2020. This conference would allow me to learn research-based strategies to help my trauma-affected students. The presenters attending are leaders in this field and this opportunity is invaluable to my growth as an educator. In addition to the conference attendence cost, I need funding for airfare, lodging, and food while I am away.
