Virtual Reality in the classroom sounds like a pipe dream, even today. For many, the concept of virtual reality is still science fiction. As a Social Studies teacher, I want my students to experience the wonders, joy, and magnificence of our world. However, field trips are prohibitively expensive, time consuming, and not always possible with limited funding and time. Google Cardboard is the solution to all of these issues. Google Cardboard is the most versatile and affordable way to bring the world to my students. Through Google Cardboard, a literal world of possibilities open up for my classroom. This is an affordable virtual reality headset that utilizes the phones of my students to take them around the world. For example, Google Expedition is an app that only works with Google Cardboard. Through this app, my students can experience an exhaustive number of locations in virtual reality. From ruins of the ancient world, to the International Space Station, Google Expedition facilitates virtual video tours with 360 degree views and new locations being added all the time. Just recently, many famous scenes from the life of Alexander Hamilton were added including the dueling ground where he and Aaron Burr faced off in their legendary duel. Furthermore, Youtube has begun incorporating 360 degree videos, which further increases the virtual reality library available to my students. Museums, ruins, space, and even the North Pole are all open to my students with this technology. Through these affordable sets, I will be able to guide my students through the Colosseum in the morning, and the American West in the afternoon. For a history class, this technology can only be rivaled by a time machine. Your donation to this amazing cause will allow my students to experience the world in ways they never imagined they could.
