I work at a 3rd year charter school and, while the spirit is well-intentioned, we have extended curriculum beyond our means. This year, we offered some new electives, including my photography classes. The student demand far exceeded our expectations and the funds for cameras and computers has simply not materialized. Even without cameras, my students have been not just content, but enthusiastic to learn about an art form I hold near and dear. These cameras and computers will help my students daily and all year long. The cameras will be used for taking photos that align with the content that we are working on for that week and they will be used to take photos for shows and contests that offer scholarships. Outside of class, they will also be used for the students in my class and the Yearbook staff to capture the moments that they would like to save and share in the yearbook. We have also been asked to do photoshoots for clubs so that they can use the pictures to be shared with the public. The computers will allow my students to upload their photos and to learn Photoshop. Having knowledge in Photoshop will be useful for them no matter what career path they choose and it is very important to me that they get learn to use it correctly. Also, the computers will help the Yearbook staff to put together a yearbook that everybody will be proud of. Having access to cameras and computers like these will not only help these students to continue their excitement for photography, but will also help them gain knowledge that will remain with them for a lifetime.
