Our school currently serves a number of self-contained classrooms as well as Interrelated Resource services to students at every grade level. Many, if not all of our students seek some level of sensory input to assist them in achieving self-regulation.
Our students will use the sensory room in a variety of ways and times throughout the school day. It will be part of the daily schedule for my Pre-K classroom, along with several of our self-contained special education classrooms. It will however be accessible for all students in need.
With the help of an occupational therapist we will be able to create obstacle courses to improve gross motor functioning for our students. The swing will provide vestibular input and will be used as a calming strategy.
Swinging has been a successful way for specific students to engage in their schoolwork. It is also a highly preferred activity for many students and can be used to practice early language skills. The play tent will be used as a space for student's to calm down and have a break from sensory stimulation. The gymnastics mat, balls, balance beam, along with ring toss game will be used to practice hand eye coordination for student's with disabilities and improve gross and fine motor skills. The stretchy bands are a focusing strategy, as well as giving resistance to the body to assist with calming. The parachute is an engaging activity that will be used with groups of students to promote social interactions, which is an area of difficulty in many of our classrooms.
Creating this sensory room will be highly meaningful for our students with and without disabilities and will meet a true need at our school. Your generous donation will change the lives of our students greatly and improve their physical and academic functioning.
