Teaching history today involves implementing Common Core Standards into the classroom along with getting students personally connected to the past. Reading "A Soldier's Heart" is the perfect way to incorporate the standards. History needs to come alive for my students by getting them a real-life connection to the past. No longer can students learn about the past by just copying notes off the board. This novel, "A Soldier's Heart" by Gary Paulson will not only allow me to teach Civil War content, but also to enrich their reading comprehension through a historical fiction novel. Students will also see the connection between social studies and language arts.
