All elements of literacy are connected to make a good reader. My students strive to be the best readers they can be. An area of literacy that my students struggle in is comprehension. Comprehension effects their academic performance in all subjects not just Language Arts. To improve comprehension students must be able to read fluently. When a student reads fluently they demonstrate expression, accuracy and prosody. If a reader is struggling with fluency, they can not attend to the meaning of the text. Through this project, my hope is that students will be able to read Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems to build their fluency in a comfortable setting and increase their love for reading. When reading Elephant and Piggie books, the reader must pay special attentions to how the words are written and which punctuation marks are being used. When writing Elephant and Piggie, Mo Willems used various punctuation marks and font size because he did this readers must change their voice, increase their speed of reading and use different voices. All of these helps readers become fluent. They are also short reads allowing them to be used at the beginning of guided reading groups and because most books only have two characters students can partner read. When students partner read they are able to listen and critique their partner. Who doesn't love a comfortable place to read? The second part of my DonorsChoose.org project is a reading carpet and pillows so that my student will "feel at home" and want to read. Over the past 10 years of teaching I have learned that students are more willing to read when they are not forced to and are in a relaxed setting and I would like to provide that for my students.
