This year I am entering my first full year as a middle school special education teacher. As a special education teacher, I am responsible for monitoring students' progress towards their IEP goals each month. Last year I was the case manager over 8th grade, and this year I will be the case manager for both 7th and 8th grade. My students all have disabilities ranging in severity from mild to moderate. Some students are English Language Learners on top of having unique learning needs. It can be very difficult to get access to enough computers to be able to complete this progress monitoring in a reasonable amount of time. This coming year it will be more difficult because there are more students! Having these available in my classroom will make it so that I can schedule progress monitoring around my students' schedules instead of around when I am able to get access to computers. This will make it much easier on them. I would also like to use these computers with my RTI class, where students who are below grade level in Language Arts or Math have the opportunity to receive small group instruction at their level, with the goal of bringing them back up to grade level. As part of this class, the students use computer programs such as Carnegie Learning, MobyMax, IXL Math, and others. Having these laptops will allow my students to work on increasing their Math skills to bring them closer to grade level! I am thrilled and excited for the gains that I know my students will make this year. I want to help them in any way that I can, and this technology will allow them access to activities and learning that will allow them to make progress towards their goals.
