The students that I work with are not only scared to be in a new school, but usually they are with a teacher who does not speak their language. Most often, the student goes through a silent period and appear as if they have no reading or math skills. The PENpal starter kit would allow me to teach phonics and phonemic awareness, build key school and classroom vocabulary, teach key vocabulary for any subject, and listen to recordings of students reading and evaluate their language development. This will not only support what the students are currently learning, but will also accelerate their development and production of the English language and will allow them to be more successful throughout their future years in school. Not only will the PENpal allow for technology integration into the classroom, but it will also help ELL's learn how to communicate and collaborate with their classmates. This will allow the students to gain the emotional support and confidence that they need to fully feel as if they are contributing to their learning experience. The PENpal will not only be beneficial to me as a teacher, but it will also help in eliminating the ELL student from being isolated or having another student feel singled out because they are having to translate all material for the other student. After the initial starter kit is purchased, more pens can be bought in the future to be used with students in even more classrooms, thus increasing language development and more rapidly closing the gap.
