Establishing a sense of community with our students is imperative, and not having enough space on our "story rug" causes our young students to often feel left out among their classmates. This has a much bigger impact than one might think on a young mind when a student is "unable" to join the group because there just isn't enough space for everyone to "sit together." Having this bright, vibrant rug allows our library time to be shared comfortably with one another with enough space for every restless bum that comes to rest on this new story rug. It allows the library to become that much more inviting to our students, and gives them an area that they can relax in without feeling confined by attempting to fit everyone together in a space meant for much fewer bodies. It also helps foster that sense of belonging and community that comes from sharing space with their classmates, and still having enough room for themselves. I'm looking forward to their excited faces when they finally have enough room to take more joy out of our library time together.
