High school classrooms often lack the comfort and center-based design of the elementary level, but why? Students of all ages benefit from environments that provide comfort and invite collaboration. Do you learn best when uncomfortable or cramped? Right now, the 26 wooden square desks in my classroom fit best in rows or tight groups that leave students straining to share work and ideas. A horseshoe-shaped desk, meant to enhance conversation and shared brainstorming, new lapdesks, and alternative seating like stools will help me design new spaces in my room and encourage meaningful, comfortable learning. I hope these new pieces will help me transform my classroom and teaching.
