I teach kindergartners in a Title I school where 97% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Most of our students don't have many books at home and need a lot of focused instruction to become readers. It's hard for people to believe that kids can start kindergarten "behind," but on standardized tests, most of our students begin kindergarten scoring in the lowest 10% of kids nationally. We work really hard with every student every day to make sure the children become strong readers, and it's wonderful to say that over 80% of our students make incredible progress and finish kindergarten completely ready for first grade.
