With an increase in understanding of student growth and development, research has shown that alternative seating and student choice are more conducive to productivity. Outside of the classroom lies a fast paced world full of choices. I feel that it is important that the classroom reflects the world around us and provided students with the ability to control their learning. Flexible seating allows students to choose what learning space will allow them to complete their best work. As a result of flexible seating, they will have a greater opportunity to complete work to their highest potential and find growth in themselves as learners. I want to provide my students with seating options that support their learning and increase their focus. Earlier this year I had purchased a few yoga mats and camping chairs for independent writing time. My students love being able to use these learning spaces, however there is not enough for everyone. When they are choosing their own learning space they are so focused and engaged. I can only imagine how motivated every student will be if they are all able to choose their own learning space! With this project, every student will have the opportunity to do their best work by laying on a yoga mat, sitting on a balance ball, standing and working at a standing desk, or by sitting on a stability cushion or stool throughout the school day.
