With a garden to care for, students will be able to apply the skills and facts they are learning in school to real life. Every grade has units of study that can be directly linked to a school garden, which would provide students the opportunity to experiment, observe, and draw conclusions. Students would be able to apply mathematics, science, and literacy skills when caring for and observing our garden. We plan to integrate math, science, literacy, and community building skills in our garden. We will harvest fruits and vegetables for our cafeteria. We will also plant butterfly plants to take care of our monarchs. We will purchase a raised garden bed kit which we will place outside of the 1st and 2nd grade hallway. We will also purchase soil to start the garden. We already have seeds which we have begun to grow in our classrooms. Students will help to care for the garden and will use the garden to study life cycles of plants and insects. They will also have the opportunity to apply math skills, such as measurement.
