The novel "Chains" follows a 13-year-old slave, Isabel, and her younger sister, Ruth, as they are promised freedom during the American Revolution. Isabel is enslaved in New York City, and provides a unique perspective that will profoundly engage my students. This novel humanizes slavery as well as the American Revolution that most have only read about in textbooks. It uses effective story telling to teach the American Revolution, as well as little discussed history of the roles slaves played in the war. Through reading this novel, students will be exposed to thoughtful, well-researched writing that will provoke engaging discussion, critical thinking and empathy.
