Traditional seating is not the best option for some students. The desks and chairs are not conducive to spatial arrangement in the classroom and can impede classroom collaboration. For some students, they are uncomfortable and distract them from their learning. Flexible seating options give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. The seating allows students with diverse physical needs to be comfortable and engaged either independently or with their classmates on project-based learning. Through his project, our students will be able to choose stadium seats, rubber exercise balls, stools, standing areas, rolling chairs, or traditional desks and tables while they are completing their work. Lap desks would provide another alternative to desks in the rooms and help facilitate group work as students work between our classrooms and even in the hall or extended learning area.
