I will use this book as an alternative to traditional textbooks which tend to propagandize history and present the USA as a homogeneously united country, a reality proven false by the strife of the last several years. I will teach my U.S. Government students the real reasons why we have such different views on the role of government in society, race, immigration, voting rights and increasingly, reality itself. American Nations by Colin Woodard is a study of the eleven rival nations of North America, nations which defy state and even national boundaries. The values that each of these nations hold are the primary reason that the United States is such a divided and contradictory nation. The U.S. is almost ungovernable at the federal level, and the competition between these nations is at the heart of the existential conflict. We are in a Cold Civil War, and I want my students to understand the nature of the conflict so as to hopefully pave the way for the next generation to inject some sanity into American society.
