I am so excited about the possibilities in a classroom emphasizing cooperative learning with flexible seating. Throughout my 28 years of teaching learners have changed as society changes. We are now in a culture where working together to explore and discover have become very necessary. Our world is growing and changing at warp speed. For our children to be productive members of their communities, we as educators must ignite a fire in them to discover all they can about the world they live in. We want all children to be 21st century learners and to have the ability to become whatever they set their minds to. My project focuses on structuring the learning environment within my first grade classroom as a place where children learn together. By allowing flexible seating, each child will have the opportunity to not only work with any of their peers but also to choose a seating/center situation that is best conducive to their individual learning style. I have begun purchasing tables and learning centers at different heights. This grant will give the children a choice in seating to match the varied learning tables and stations. In conjunction with flexible seating needs, because the children won't have an "assigned" work space like you typically see in class. The cart and book bins I requested in the grant will be used for that purpose.I believe these two things will allow all students to be minds and hands on the entire day at school.
