I have had sixteen years of experience in first grade teaching five and six year olds. They walk shyly into the classroom eager to learn how to read. Yet, some do not find it so easy. Teaching them to fall in love with books is my favorite part of teaching. In December 2010, I graduate from Appalachian University with a Master's in Reading. While my school is not a Title I school, over the past 8 years we have seen a dramatic increase in our free and reduced lunch numbers. With the drastic budget cuts in education, the effect is being felt in the classroom. Basic supplies are harder to come by, much less the extra support needed to implement the best practices in education.
