Listening to reading, helps students develop the skills needed to be successful readers on their own. At the First grade level, the students are laying the foundation for their reading futures. By listening to reading, many great benefits can be seen especially for students who are learning to speak and read in English for the first time. Listening to books read aloud teaches students to listen critically to the events of a story without struggling with the words while still working on comprehending the elements of the story. For example, students are introduced to difficult levels of text that are above their reading level, but are within their Zone of Proximal Development. Having a selection of individual CD players will allow the students to take charge of their learning and listen independently while I work with a small group on reading instruction. Also listening can introduce new vocabulary to young readers and while listening to reading, students are able to use their schema to make connections while visualizing the story and creating mental images in order to better understand what is being read. Thank you so much for considering my project!
